A talented musician with a murky past, Justin’s demons generated a roller-coaster existence for Hannah, his sexual abuse as a child at the root of his dysfunctional personality and addiction to sex. When he suddenly lost his job over an affair with a pupil as a result of an anonymous letter, Hannah’s life was turned upside down. With his friends blaming her for writing the letter, she was finally driven to do her own whistle blowing……concerning the inappropriate behaviour of her male colleagues with their pupils.
But Hannah should have stayed clear of Justin’s manipulative and vindictive best friend and housemaster, Andrew Boye. After he threatened to physically attack her one Christmas Eve, she was forced to attend a disciplinary meeting with the headmaster, Terry Adams: its intention……to silence what she knew about the sex offences of male teachers at the school.
When Hannah eventually moved on to another high profile boarding school, she unexpectedly encountered the demeaning behaviour of its rich, teenage reprobates and the resentful conduct of two of her male colleagues who colluded to get rid of her. She speculated whether her colleagues’ furtive attitude towards her was because she had expressed her opinions too volubly about her badly-behaved pupils. Or was it because she was writing a book? A book about her experiences with a sex offender. Or was it because her head of department’s questionable history made him fearful for his own fate?
This is a story of a talented, middle-aged teacher whose life had been filled with decent people until she went to work in some of England’s most respected and well-known public schools. What happened thereafter mapped her journey through some difficult personal and professional times. But when her revengeful behaviour took on the elements of a subterranean world, she knew she was losing something that meant the world to her – her Celtic fibre.
But through it all, Hannah sensed her run of bad luck would soon one day end. And she never did forgot her children, the natural force which drove her to keep things together……at all costs.
